I have been backing up my VM pvm, along with everything else on my usb 3 ssd, with Carbon Copy Cloner but the Acronis offer made me wonder if there is some reason for not doing that. Using the included Envoy enclosure, you would use a disk cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner to copy all of the data to the new drive and then replace the internal drive with the new one This should make it bootable, but thats unnecessary for me, and should create recovery partition, but it didnt Backup app Carbon Copy Cloner Unmount. Qiling Backup, an alternative to Carbon Copy Cloner for Windows, can back up, restore, and clone disk, partition, and system. I know that the recommended settings are for Time Machine to not back up the VM but, since my VM pvm file is on an external ssd, Time Machine does not see it anyway. I am familiar with Acronis since I used their backup software when I worked on Windows, but I wondered if there was any particular reason to not use other backup software for the VM. I was going through some of the general settings for my Windows VM when I noticed the Acronis software offer for backing up the VM. Carbon Copy Cloner is a security backup copy tool that allows you to clone your entire hard drive, or just select certain files that you want to back up.

They can backup your files, but often not necessarily capture the extended attributes with regards to ownership and permissions etc, resulting in an inability to make a sensible restore. To back up files by itself at a specific time point, this software offers two features: backup and file sync. SuperDuper is the second choice but seriously pay the 40 for it. A lot of backup services charge monthly fees.

The main problem for SuperDuper and CCC is the inability to write to NTFS volumes. If you want a free and open source alternative, read about rsync and create your own script to run at intervals and copy your modified files.
